About Off My Head Hats

From Tartan Rugs to Luxury Faux Fur — Our Story

After finishing my Surveying degree at Nottingham Trent Polytechnic, I took a job at a local pub — The Hole In The Wall — while applying for jobs in my field. It was there that I met a bunch of lads who were passionate Triumph Spitfire fans, heading to a rally in Holland.

They were after t-shirts, but I had a better idea. Why not make them all a hat from a tartan travel rug? They'd stand out from the crowd — and with all those open-top cars, a hat made a lot of practical sense too! My mum had given me a load of travel rugs thinking my student house would be cold. It wasn't — but they turned out to be perfect for this.

The lads loved them. So much so, they asked me to make as many more as I could, convinced they'd sell at the rally in Holland. I made about 30 extra. All sold, very quickly!

One of the lads worked for The Prince's Youth Business Trust and saw something in what I'd created. With a £1,200 loan from the Prince Charles, Off My Head Hats was officially born!

Made in England, Made to Last

Over 30 years later, every hat is still handmade in England. I source only the finest quality faux furs and fabrics — because I believe the quality of your materials is the quality of your finished hat. You'll never find cheap faux fur or felt here; the end result simply wouldn't be good enough.

From bold, oversized festival hats beloved by Space Cowboy fans, to elegant Downton Abbey-inspired styles, each piece is made to order and crafted with care.
